Direct Access

Physical Therapy

Direct access allows you to see a physical therapist without needing a referral from another healthcare provider.

Minnesota state law does not require patients to have a referral for physical therapy. However, your specific insurance company may still require one, meaning you may need a referral to ensure your insurance covers your visits.

Every insurance plan is different, so to be certain you have direct access, you should call the number on your insurance card. That said, we’ve outlined some general guidelines below to help you understand whether your plan might allow direct access.

Do I Have Direct Access Care?

The following types of insurance require patients to have a referral before seeing physical therapy:
– Medicare
– PMAP
– Medicaid
– State or Federal Employer plans

If a referral is required, we can help you obtain one through our family practice providers.

The following types of insurance may have direct access meaning a referral may not be required:
– Your insurance card says “direct access” or “open access”
– You have a commercial plan, whether employer-sponsored or individually purchased

If you believe you may have direct access and do not require a referral for our physical therapy, call your insurance company to verify coverage.

Yes. In Minnesota, patients can receive physical therapy without a referral for up to 90 days. After that, a referral is required to continue treatment.

Some insurance plans may have additional restrictions—such as requiring a referral before 90 days—so it’s important to verify with your insurance provider.

Absolutely. If you prefer to see your primary care provider before starting physical therapy, you can always choose to get a referral. At Integracare, our integrated team of physical therapists, chiropractors, and family medicine providers work together to coordinate your care and consult as needed.

Your insurance company many have an online portal to see coverage information. However, the easiest way to ensure all of you questions are answered, is to call the phone number on the back of your insurance card. A representative from your insurance company will be able to answer any questions you may have.
