Direct Access

Direct access is a feature of certain insurance plans that allows you to see our physical therapists without the need for a referral from another provider.

Minnesota state law does not require patients to have a referral for physical therapy. However, your specific insurance company may still require one, meaning you may need a referral to ensure your insurance covers your visits.

Every insurance plan is different, so to be certain you have direct access, you should call the number on your insurance card. With that in mind, we do have general information below that will give you an idea of if your plan may have direct access.

Do I Have Direct Access Care?

The following types of insurance require patients to have a referral before seeing physical therapy:
– Medicare
– PMAP
– Medicaid
– State or Federal Employer plans

If you need a referral for physical therapy, we can help you get a referral from one of our family practice providers.

The following types of insurance may have direct access and may not require patients to have a referral before seeing physical therapy:
– Many plans that say “direct access” or “open access” on your insurance card
– Some commercial insurance plans, either that you pay for on your own, or sponsored by an employer

If you believe you may have direct access and do not require a referral for our physical therapy, call your insurance company to verify coverage.

In Minnesota, patients who have direct access can receive care from a licensed physical therapist for up to 90 days. After this time, if the patient is still treating, they will need to get a referral.

Your individual insurance company may have other restrictions on direct care, such as requiring a referral after less than 90 days. Inquire with your insurance company for more information.

Yes, if you would like to see your primary care provider first to get a referral, this is always an option. At Integracare our diverse team of physical therapists, chiropractors, and family practice providers ensures that your treating provider can consult other medical professionals if necessary.

Your insurance company many have an online portal to see coverage information. However, the easiest way to ensure all of you questions are answered, is to call the phone number on the back of your insurance card. A representative from your insurance company will be able to answer any questions you may have.
